God’s Presence and God’s Word |
The
Bible states that Jesus is building His Church and it will be a
powerfully supernatural Church that will be seriously bold and walk in
power. This Church will be build upon two main features – His presence
and His Word. There will be no need for smoke and mirrors; hype will be
totally unnecessary – just God’s presence and the preaching of His Word.
These two will release life-changing power.
The early Church in the book of Acts had God’s Word. They preached
and shared it with the unsaved; it was taught daily to the believers.
God’s Word was central to the life of the early Church and foundational
for everything they did. They were not hearers of the Word only – they
applied, obeyed and acted upon everything that they heard.

Boldness – Behaviour Born Out Of Belief |
This
Sunday I want to continue to speak about boldness. Before leaving for
the nations of Moldova and Russia to minister I spoke in general about
being bold in our daily lives – bold towards God, bold for God, and bold
in our faith. We saw that BOLDNESS IS BEHAVIOR BORN OUT OF BELIEF. And,
if we believe that God is powerful and that with Him nothing is
impossible – then we will be bold.
This Sunday I want to talk about being bold in our prayers. Many
believers today have a very impotent prayer life if they pray at all.
They seldom see anything change or happen because they pray and so
become discouraged and either cease praying or pray such general insipid
prayers that it would not matter if God answered them or not. This is
not the way it is meant to be.

When
you were born again God could have taken you into heaven immediately.
You were ready and had all that was needed to enter – a personal love
relationship with Jesus Christ. However, God chose to leave you here
because He had some things for you to accomplish. Ephesians 2:10 states:
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
God wants us to take up our cross daily and do that which He has
called us to do – to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and to do it as
we “go into all the world and make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19). He has
called us to tell others about Him. He has called us to become involved
in what He is doing – rescuing the lost from a sure, certain and
permanent destiny in Hell. We need, like Jesus, to be about our Father’s
business.

Ah!
A Monday and another work week is in front of us … opportunities will
be there each day for you to influence others for Jesus. You can
influence them through the way you live, the words you speak, the
attitude you exhibit when with others or when in difficult situations
that are demanding a lot from you. People who know you are a disciple of
the Lord are watching you. Live carefully and in a way that glorifies
Jesus.
And, when at work – work hard and do more than is expected of you.
The Bible states that, as disciples, we “do all things as unto the
Lord.” This means that regardless of your job and who signs your pay
cheque you are to work as if God is your boss and thus represent Him
well in your work place. Stay focused, love people, and work hard. In
fact, Jesus would tell you that you are do always do more than is
expected of you. You are to “go that extra mile” and do what is expected
AND THEN SOME.

The
religious leaders of Jesus’ day thought they had a terrific way of
helping people apply the commands of Scripture to every aspect of their
day-to-day lives. They verbally passed on from generation to generation
extra traditions to accompany and expand upon the written Torah (holy
book), the Law given through Moses. These extra rules were called the
“tradition of the elders,” or oral Torah. They were considered a “fence
around the law.”
Based on a better-safe-than-sorry principle, these fences of
tradition were designed to ensure people stayed conservative,
conventional, conformist, and supposedly far from sin. In order to break
a law and thereby fall into sin, a person would first have to
intentionally “hop the fence” of tradition. It was these fences that
Jesus kept breaking down, jumping, or simply ignoring. The reason? These
fences or traditions were keeping people from experiencing the living
God and having to interact with the living God in their day-to-day
lives… no longer keeping Him at a safe distance or “fenced in.”

Write, a Bible scholar and serious disciple of the Lord, wrote: “I
believe that the closer we get to the original Jesus the closer we are
to recognizing the face of the living God.” How true!
However, to really see the original Jesus we need to pray against and
take off religious glasses so that we can see clearly who Jesus really
is. Religion has painted a seriously distorted picture of the real
Jesus. They have made Him sweet and nice and not radical and commanding
attention. They have made Him soft and cuddly and not One who is Lord of
the universe and thus strong and powerful. They have turned Him into a
God that winks at indiscretion and sin and not One who judges and
demands (strong word) holiness and obedience.

Change of Heart – Change of Mind |

Jesus said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 4:17)

The
early Christians realized that the scandalous edge of their faith was
not that they were attributing deity to a human being (calling Jesus
God), but that they were attributing humanity to a deity (calling God a
man).
For them, the question was not, Can a man be God? But Can or would the one God, Creator of the cosmos, dare to become a man?

Many
people who start out loving the Lord soon find themselves back in
religion and devoid of any real feeling of love for the Savior. In fact,
religion is what is left after a true love has been trained away.
Doug Banister writes, “Religion is the archrival of intimate
spirituality…Religion , a tiresome system of manmade dos and don’ts,
woulds and should – impotent to change human lives but tragically
capable of devastating them – is what is left after a true love for God
has drained away. Religion is the shell that is left after the real
thing has disappeared.”

“It
is no surprise, in view of His teachings and actions, that Jesus was
crucified. What is surprising is that it did not happen sooner.” (Ben
Witherington III)
Jesus’ teachings and most of His actions would have been seen by
religious people as more than mildly irreligious; He would have been
considered a complete radical and one who was against what God had set
up through Moses thousands of years before. This is because He was
against it. He clearly had an irreligious agenda that was determined to
bypass the salvation system of His day to connect people directly with
God. His teachings and actions, according to the religious standards and
teachings of His day, were absolutely scandalous.

once remarked, “I don’t reject your Christ, I love your Christ. It’s
just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
The reason the early disciples of the Lord (the Book of Acts) were
able to turn the known world upside down in such a short time was they
were so much like Jesus. The early disciples were intimately connected
with Jesus, like a body to its head. Remember, Paul tells us that the
Church is the Body of Christ and Jesus is the Head of the Church. And,
as long as the disciples stayed intimately connected to the Head they
continued to love as He loved and radically alter the world one life at a
time.

Looking
at the life of the Church and what has happened in the past in the
Kingdom and in “Church-dom” we could say that the big ate the small, so
the key was to grow a large church before you got swallowed up and you
grew a large church with a lot of programming and complexity
In the present day the fast eats the slow. So, the key to a healthy
and growing church is to grow a nimble church of flexible teams and only
essential and basic programming. And, the programming must be built
relationally. Thus the church needs to abort any ministry that is not
working. Our motto should be – must be – “Jesus is the only thing that
we promise will never change.”

of the person and work of Jesus Christ from the Bible every week with
passion and clarity. The issue is always, only, fully, uncompromisingly,
and exclusively Jesus.

So many people are waiting for the leading of the Holy Spirit. The personal leading is not coming. It came! Read your Bible.
People constantly say to me, “I don’t feel led!” And, it takes a great
deal of restraint not to give them one of my wooden pencils so that they
could feel lead… yes, I still use old fashion wood pencils (from
recycled wood). There are many things we don’t need special,
personalized leading about. When something is recorded in the Bible and
is valid for all believers – then you don’t need to wait to feel
something or wait till you receive some special, personalized leading of
the Holy Spirit. You simply read what is written and obey – regardless
of your feelings.

What changes a person? Don’t be too quick with the answer!
I believe there is only one thing that changes people – a revelation of
truth that only the Holy Spirit can bring. Knowledge does not change us –
we all have a great deal of knowledge and know-how that we simply
ignore and have not applied. Experience does not necessarily change us –
if it did then we would not be constantly relearning the same lesson;
once would be enough. Others cannot change us. Making New Year’s
resolutions certainly never changed anyone on a permanent basis – not
among those I relate to anyways.

impossibility. They believed that to be a believer in the Lord meant
being an active member of the Body of Christ and thus connected and
committed to a local expression of that worldwide Church.

Lostology is about understanding lost people and loving lost people by giving them directions to God.
Think about being lost on a road somewhere. If you are driving to a new

calling someone you have a relationship with and who knows the way to
where you are going? Of course you are. It’s awkward enough when you are
lost, so if given the choice you would to talk to someone you know who
can give you directions than to a total stranger.

The Written and the Living Word |
|
As
we are about to celebrate the birth of the Savior remember that the
Bible calls Him the Word (John 1:1-2). He is the Living Word in whom was
light and life; the Living Word who came full of grace and truth. So,
as you read your Bible – the written Word – remember that unlike any
other book in the world you do not read it for information or for the
story line; you read it to come to know the Author. All other books are
read either because of a good story line (which the Bible also has) or
to gain more information and hopefully knowledge. However, the Bible was
written so that we may come to better know the Author – God Himself.

we are celebrating the birth of Christ and His first coming to earth
from Heaven it is good to look forward to His second coming. In His
incarnation He was born King (not a prince waiting to rule). In His
second coming He returns as King of kings and Lord of lords. His reign
began long before His birth as He is God and has been ever increasing
since His birth as His Kingdom continues to expand in the hearts of
people. This continual expansion was first recorded in the prophet
Isaiah. By His grace and according to His Word we are part of a
worldwide Kingdom that exists within the kingdoms of the world.

The Bible in the Life of a Disciple |
Most
days you will find me in either a Tim Horton’s or a Dairy Queen talking
to believers and non-believers. I enjoy talking to people and probing
their hearts to see what they believe and how they are doing. I am
interested in people and the journey of life they are on. A common
question I ask is what the think of God’s Word, the Bible. The answers
vary and go from A to Z often spoken with great passion or feeling.
Believers usually say they believe the Bible is God’s Word and contains
the truth (note: not “is the truth”) and non-believers either say it is a
good book or simply not worth referencing. But, one thing they both
have in common is that most often then will tell me they don’t read it.
Believer and non-believer are the same in this regard – no matter their
stand on the Bible they are simply not reading it.

1 John states… “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands

appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the
eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We

The Benefits of His Grace |
Because of God’s grace each and every one of us can be saved because we are only saved by grace and not through any works we might do no matter how good or even how great. Jesus was born and came as one of us “full of grace and truth” which made Him different than any other human being ever born. His birth led directly to the Cross of Calvary where He died to defeat the power of sin (1 Corinthians 15) because He willingly died because He was “full of grace.” Death had no place in Him and no power over Him because there was no sin in Him and He had never committed a sin in His 30 years of life. He willingly offered His life and died for the sins of others – this is “full of grace.”

Grace is so wonderful. Because of grace God loved us while we were still
sinners and totally ignoring Him (Romans 3:23) and He sent His Son to
die for us – not because we deserved it but because of His grace. In
love He sent Jesus to die for us (Romans 5:8). Grace enabled God to love
us and send His Son for us and thus to become one with us on that first
Christmas morning. And, because we are saved by grace and not works He
is then able to pour out that same love on us. And, then, because of
grace, we are able to love Him in return. The Bible states, “We love Him
because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19) and because of this we need to
love others (1 John 4:11).

We are looking at grace as we approach Christmas. Grace states very
loudly and in a clear manner that we can only relate to God on the basis
of His grace. My good works didn’t earn my standing before God; Jesus
had earned my standing before Him. I wasn’t just a lovable guy in need
of a personal relationship; I was a sinner who needed to be rescued from
God’s just wrath by the death of Jesus. Focusing on this sweet truth
makes grace truly amazing. It helps when we are struggling against sin.
It helps when we need to forgive others and don’t feel that we can.

John 1:14 states that Jesus came full of grace and truth. So, it takes
both grace and truth to be balanced as a disciple of the Lord.
If you have all truth you will be legalistic and miss the spirit of the

To understand the birth of Christ and its eternal repercussions and
benefits we must connect the crib to the cross. The birth of Jesus who
is “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14) makes little sense and has no
earth-shattering and eternity-altering meaning unless we connect His
birth to His death. God came and was born as a babe in Bethlehem and
became one of us (a human being) so He could then die for us as the one
and only perfect human to have ever lived. Because He was a spotless and
perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins His death on the cross
brought and bought forgiveness and cleansing of all unrighteousness (1
John 1:9) for all who believe and receive Him (John 3:16).

It Is Not a Matter of “I Have To” |
The church was never conceived by God to be driven by duty. It was
designed to be driven by desire. We are to be motivated by a sincere
desire to please the Head of the Church who is Jesus. This will, of
course, include a desire to fulfill His last command and to complete the
work that He came to accomplish – seek and save the lost. Our walk with
Him is one of love. We obey because we love Him. We are rooted and
grounded in His love as disciples. Faith works by love and, of course,
love covers a multitude of sin. Love is the soil in which a healthy
church grows and moves forward. Our life as disciples should never be
driven by duty and should always be moving forward because of His love.

way that it really makes no sense to a non-Christian and is even
confusing to the believer. In several cases I was not sure the person
was saved. In one case I questioned my own salvation due to the
frustration and other feelings I was experiencing at the end of the
sharing. Most Christians can’t do it! They cannot share the Gospel in a
manner that allows the Gospel to be understood by others – Christian or
non-Christian. These people are born again.

Character Characteristics |
Today the Lord is looking for people whose hearts are sold out to Him
and whose lifestyle indicate that they are serious about following Him
regardless of where He might lead them or what it will cost them in
time, effort or money. These are people who love the Lord with their
whole hearts; people who have taken the time to build a good
relationship with Him and who know their God so that they are now able
to move out and do mighty exploits (see Daniel 11:32).

An aspiration will only become a realization with perspiration.
Remember that – it is important. If you are ever going to achieve
anything in life for Jesus and His Kingdom; if you aspire to do
something great with Jesus – it will never happen or become a reality –
it will never be realized – without a lot of hard work and an investment
of time and energy. Nothing comes easy and everything in the Kingdom is
moved forward by prayer and being willing to invest yourself in the
task at hand. It is called hard work. For your dream to come true you
will need to remember that An aspiration will only become a realization with perspiration.

If Facebook Were a Country… |

If
Facebook were a country it would be the world’s third largest. Data
Genetics reports that 42% of the U.S. population has an account with the
social networking site – in Canada the percentage is far greater. And,
the majority of the “Facebookites” are unsaved. It is a vast mission
field that touches almost every nation on the planet – and you can reach
into those nations without leaving the comfort and warmth of your own
home.

On
a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a
crude little lifesaving station. The building was just a hut, and there
was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch
over the sea, and with no thought for themselves went out day and night
tirelessly searching for the lost. Many lives were saved by this
wonderful little station, so that it became famous. Some of those who
were saved, and various others in the surrounding area, wanted to become
associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort
for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews
trained. The little lifesaving station grew.

We are being called out of or little puddle and into the sea. But what
is the sea? What is it we are heading towards and will find ourselves
immersed in? Good question. I believe I have a little insight into that
simply because I have spent a fair amount of time thinking, praying, and
discussing this who current call upon the Church. Let me make an
incomplete and maybe slightly inadequate attempt at shedding some light
on the subject of the “sea.”

Undecided whether you want to leave your puddle and begin to swim toward
the sea? Not sure you can do it? Not sure you want to risk it? Not sure
that you have what it takes? Well, call me crazy, but I seriously
believe YOU CAN DO IT! I am absolutely convinced that true disciples of
the Lord Jesus sense their divine destiny in the Lord and really want to
live out their God-given dream reaching their full potential in Him.

Swim with those who swim with you |
There is an old saying that a prophet friend of mine says constantly to
me when, as a leader, I am a little discouraged because not everyone is
on board and moving forward into the future that God has planned. Every
time I see people unwilling to leave their little puddle and head out to
sea with the rest of us and so feel somewhat disappointed and down… He
always manages to call or write and say, “Remember, run with those who
run with you.” Or, we could say it this way, when you leave your puddle –
swim with those who are still swimming and are moving in the same
direction you are.

As we are swimming out of our puddles into the wide-open, deep, and
sometimes dangerous sea – into unchartered waters (see yesterday’s blog)
– remember one truth: Go with the Flow. There is always a current or an
undertow and we simply need to find it and then move with it into the
things the Lord is asking us to become and to do for Him. Go with the
Flow … discover where the Holy Spirit is moving, flowing and taking us
and then slide into that current and go with the flow.

Swimming Out of Your Puddle |
I feel like the Lord is speaking to me prophetically and that He is
speaking to me personally but also to you as well. Here is what I hear
the Lord saying. “It is time to start swimming out of your puddle into
the sea.” Now that may sound like a funny think to hear – but what makes
it even stranger is that I am 36,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean in a
jet with hundreds of other people and no quiet or privacy. I am writing
this blog on my laptop while many of them sleep and the majority of the
rest consume the free alcoholic drinks being supplied while watching
in-flight movies.

reality their task is to welcome the presence of God even though there
are problems. Sometimes we seem to be more interested in the absence of

Jesus prayed for more labourers in the harvest field – more disciples who would take seriously the call on each disciple’s life to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). The reason for this is that the harvest will not and never can self-reap. But, it will self-destruct if not reaped.

Committed to Which Church? |
If you are looking for a church there are a number of things you need to
see and experience in that church before committing yourself to be a
part of that local Body of Christ. Each could be a blog on their own but
I have chosen to simply list each point with a one sentence comment…

Tomorrow I will be preaching on commitment once again. The Lord, in
every church around the nation and in other nations, is calling for true
disciples to become seriously committed to His Church – the soon-to-be
Bride of His Son Jesus the Christ. Commitment is being demanded on many
fronts – just put your children into hockey for the winter season and
see what is demanded of you and from you. But, when the church asks for
commitment; well, that is often a different story. But should it be?

John Stott who recently went to be with the Lord after 60+ years of
ministering in almost every nation of the world wrote, “If the Church is
central to God’s purpose as seen in both history and the gospel, it
must surely also be central to our lives. How can we take lightly what
God takes so seriously? How dare we push to the circumference what God
has placed at the center?”

Make Your Calling and Election Sure |
1
Peter 2 talks about making your calling and election (as a Christian)
sure. Well, how do you do this? One of the most practical steps you can
take to assure your election and calling as a Christian is to join a
local church – and be seriously committed to the ongoing life of that
church. Mark Dever states, “I don’t care how much you cry during singing
or preaching, if you do not live a life marked by love towards others,
the Bible has no encouragement for you to think that you are a
Christian. None.” And, this love must be tangible and visible which only
happens when you are in long-term fellowship with other Christians in
the local church. This is the biblical standard even if it is not the
cultural or societal standard today.

You can always spot a “church dater” and thus someone who is not
committed to the local body of Christ – the Bride of Christ. They like
all the benefits of “living together” but don’t want to make a serious
and permanent commitment to the Bride – so they simply continue to date
and never marry.

Connect – Celebrate – Contribute – Commitment |
At my home church we are looking for people who really want to be a
part of the local church family. We are looking for those who are
willing to work hard and building relationships with others – even if it
means taking the initiative. We are looking for people who want to
belong to something that is going somewhere and is doing something
significant to help people know the love of God. We are looking for
people who want to belong and, in belonging, to connect.

It Will Cost You Something |
Commitment will cost you something. As you heard last Sunday – commitment cost Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego a great deal. But they trusted the Lord and the Lord honored their commitment to Him and delivered them. But, as we saw Sunday, the outcome of the “furnace fire issue” was not certain as seen by their comment, “if the Lord delivers us or even if He does not deliver us, we will not bow our knee…”

What are you most passionate about? How would you know? Simple! Look at
what you do when you have a minute to spare – what do you think about,
focus on, talk about, dream of, desire, and are moving towards? It can
be something good or even something evil and wrong in God’s sight. Often
it is simply neutral – okay but not something that should occupy every

Many people today come to a local church because they have a need – or more than one need. They want something from the church. Many others come and join because of what they can receive – good youth ministry, good worship, good teaching… and, in fact, some even attend more than one church – receiving good worship in one and excellent youth ministry from the other. They are consumers. And, as a result they lack commitment and will continue to go from church to church in years to come looking for bigger, better, different.

I have been thinking about doing this series for quite some time – in

have been on my heart since a conversation I had with several elders in a
local church. Their concern and thus their question – why are people
not committed to the local church?

Suspected Satanists Burn Teenager Alive |
Blogger note: This is just one of many confirmed news reports
circulating over the last few weeks as the world prepares itself to
celebrate the second most popular holiday next to Christmas – Halloween.
I suspect that many children of Christian parents will go out tonight
“trick or treating” thinking it is a harmless ‘secular festival’ when
really it is a dangerous ‘religious festival.’ Halloween is now centered
on the worship of Satan and the Anti-christ and is a festival or
celebration that all believers need to seriously avoid.

discussion covering some of what was in the discussion paper but
certainly not limited to the ‘teaching.’ It added new insights and new
understanding as well as depth to the document but also to our
understanding. It literally changed our hearts.

Those
who have been Baptized in the Holy Spirit and can speak in tongues have
a number of other gifts as well. These supernatural gifts are listed in
1 Corinthians 12:4-11. There are nine of them. You have the private
gift of tongues, you can prophesy (the Bible states that clearly) and
you have at least one other of the nine gifts. One of the gifts is the
“gift of healing.” This is badly needed today.

Taking a Look – I Am Amazed |
|
I
am amazed at the number of people who call themselves born again
believers who don’t attend church. The Bible states clearly that being a
true disciple of the Lord means believing (trusting with your whole
heart), belonging, and becoming more like Him each day. The Bible refers
to a believer as part of the family, the army, a peculiar people, a
royal priesthood… all descriptions of a true believer make them a part
of something bigger. The Bible is clear – you are not a believer if you
are not an active part of the body.

Blogger’s note:
Often we become all bothered and upset by little things
in our lives that are causing us a mild inconvenience. We worry over
trivial things that are not even going to be remembered in a few days or
weeks. And, we focus on things that are often, in hindsight, very
insignificant. And all this while other believers are losing their lives
because they are born again believers and disciples of the Lord – true
Christians.

You No Longer Need To Tell People About Jesus |

If you didn’t believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that
Jesus is Lord before Camping’s trumpeted “Judgment Day,” he argues, it’s

My Definition of Evangelism |
|
I
often mention to people that one of my definitions for evangelism is
“changing people’s assumptions.” In our Western context, almost everyone
has heard of at least one version of the Christian gospel. By what they
have seen on television, heard through the grapevine, or experienced in
a church setting, most feel they know what Christianity has to offer,
and they aren’t showing much interest. When pushed even further as to
why they are not drawn to Christianity, they usually mention a problem
with the church as an institution or organization. In other words, they
tell us what they think about our formal gatherings and our
churchliness.

It
has been said that people outside the Christian faith often perceive us
to be a lot like mice. If you meet just one, they’re kind of cute, but
if you come into a room full of them, they can really freak you out!
Of course, that is true. If someone comes to know you as you spend
time together, drink coffee and see each other at work or in the
neighborhood where you live – it’s cute. It’s comfortable. You are safe.
But, if you invite them to attend Sunday morning with you and there are
a bunch of “mice” all gathered together that can be overwhelming for a
‘non-mouse’ and really freak them out. They most likely will not return
a second time.

Jesus
is having an encounter with the young man who was rich. It is an
amazing encounter found in Mark 10. The young man believes he has all
the rules of life in order. According to the standards of the young
man’s world, he probably did. We assume by Mark’s description that he
was a good man, with position, title, and also enough spiritual maturity
that he comes to Jesus to ask what to him is an important question:
“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17) We have
all asked such questions, and in such ways as to get the answer we want,
but not necessarily the one we need.

found only in Jesus. Every day I hear from one or more of the leaders as

non-believers to do things with them in the hope that they will see and
hear the difference that Jesus makes in their life. It is exciting to
see and hear all that is going on.

Being Different Means Hearing God’s Voice |

As
I speak to many who call themselves disciples it soon becomes evident
that they are having issues with finding time to be with Jesus on a
daily basis. The world today is moving quickly and life can be very
demanding. Often it requires our immediate attention from the moment we
get out of bed in the morning right through to when we place our heads
back on the pillow at night. We are not talking about quality time with
Jesus here – just time, any time – some time each day. Seems almost
impossible.

To Love, Accept and Forgive |

To
love, accept and forgive makes us different. Being different then
allows us to make a difference. If we live the same way that
non-believers live we will have no impact upon the eternal destiny of
those we know and relate to, those we meet and those we love. But if we
act like Jesus did we will certainly have a major impact upon many in
our world. This is our calling as disciples of the Lord.

I have been teaching about “Being Different So That We Can Make a
Difference.” It is the biblical teaching that we need to be in the world
but not of the world. We are called to be salt and light and thus
healing and change agents in the society and communities in which we
live. If we look like, talk, live like, and entertain ourselves like
everyone who does not know Jesus and have a dynamic relationship with
Him – then we will not, in fact cannot – make a difference because we
will not be different. Our light will be hidden and not seen.

Making a Difference Year-round |
|
It
is amazing to me that people reach out at Christmas and thanksgiving to
help feed the poor or do something else for those less fortunate than
they are. Christians and churches make special efforts at both this time
of the year (thanksgiving) and in December (Christmas) to show the love
of God to others. It is almost like a light goes one, a neon sign
flashes in their mind that says, “Its thanksgiving. I am going to serve
God by reaching out to the poor.” Or, in December, “It’s Christmas and
time to let someone know of the love of Jesus – the reason for the
season.”

Life Change and Transformation |
|
Apostles
are called to preach right doctrine. But, this is not teaching
Christian doctrine for the sake of Christian doctrine. This is right
doctrine which, when believed, leads to right behavior often with
unforeseen but wonderful consequences. We are not in the business of
offering reasons why or correct moral teachings (although both of these
are good); we are in the business of life transformation and change.
Right doctrine should, when believed, lead to change, transformation and
thus right behavior.

I have been writting and teaching on “Making a
Difference by Being Different” and looking at the need for Christians to
be “joyful” so that they approach life and live life differently than
those who live without Jesus and thus without hope. This Sunday I will be preaching on “contentment” and how Christians are called to be content
in each and every situation in which they find themselves. This is, of
course, the total opposite to those who do not know Jesus who are
discontent and unhappy with life as they find it and are trying to fill a
void with material belongings, new toys, sex, drugs, alcohol, and
constant sports and entertainment.

The
Christian today needs to be different if they hope to make a difference
in their world and in the world in general. One of the major ways we
can be different is to act different than those who do not know Jesus.
In general, at this point a preacher would say you need to love everyone
no matter what they are like; you need to remove anger from your life
and live with the “peace that passes all understanding;” you need to “go
that extra mile” doing more than what is expected of you and thus do
everything as “unto the Lord.” Good religious jargon – true but still
the expected from the preacher.
